COVID-19 Response
We are incredibly grateful for our Tribe's support. It's enabled us to build infrastructure and the capacity that's made us better prepared to face the coronavirus pandemic. From putting in place the electronic medical records that have allowed our HEAL Team in the US to continue providing critical care for our neurology patients. To helping us build a team of phenomenal health care leaders, community health workers, therapists, and passionate caregivers. Our Tribe is the lifeblood of Ubuntu!
Response Measures
Our social workers have made countless calls to families in our programs and made urgent house calls as and when needed. The social office has kept us connected to our community and helped us provide the best support we can in these unprecedented times.
We launched a food program for our special needs students and their families. Thanks to our Tribe Heart’s support, we continue to provide 18 of our most vulnerable Ubuntu Kids and their families with these supplies:
Drinking water
Milk & sugar
Maize, wheat & porridge flour
Rice
Lentils
Green grams
Yellow beans
Cooking oil
Soap
Face masks
Diapers (as needed)
For several years now, we have grown vegetables in an organic garden; we have worked to increase our garden's productivity. We hired parents who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic and introduced vertical gardens to grow more green leafy vegetables in a water-efficient manner. A total of 12 families with around 58 household members, most of whom are children, have benefited directly from the garden.
We noted a worrying uptick in malnutrition during the pandemic. We hired a nutritionist to spearhead a sack garden program to serve households desperately in need of nutrient-rich food.
We hired pediatrician Dr. Joy Masinde, our first in-house physician. And with the support of our US volunteer doctors, we continue to hold telehealth medical camps.
